PEARS is for healthcare providers such as emergency medical technicians (EMTs), medical and surgical nurses, school nurses and any other healthcare provider who infrequently sees critically ill infants and children.

Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS®) is a classroom, instructor-led course that helps healthcare providers develop the knowledge and skills needed for emergency evaluation and treatment of seriously ill infants and children.  PEARS® teaches providers how to recognize respiratory distress, shock and cardiac arrest, and provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within the initial minutes of response until the child is transferred to an advanced life support provider.  The goal of PEARS® is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes.


After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the timely recognition and interventions required to prevent respiratory and cardiac arrest in any pediatric patient.
  • Understand the elements of the systematic approach to pediatric emergencies.
  • Describe priorities and specific interventions for infants and children with respiratory and/or circulatory emergencies.
  • Explain the importance of effective team dynamics during a pediatric resuscitation.
  • Use the equipment for management of respiratory and circulatory emergencies. 
  • Perform high-quality CPR.
  • Perform effective respiratory management within your scope of practice.
  • Understand the evaluate-identify-intervene sequence.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and team dynamics both as a team member and as a team leader.

 

Students who successfully complete this course will receive an AHA PEARS Provider course completion card, valid for two years.
